🎤 5 ROUND TABLES

The full details of the CIM2027 programme will be available on October 8th. This year, the congress will feature 5 dynamic round-table discussions, each addressing pressing and future-oriented topics in the field of metrology. These discussions will dive into the following key issues:

Round Table

Policy Making

Metrology for Evidence-Based Policy Making - (De)regulation in the Digital Era: Opportunities and Risks

Think about the last time you filled up your car with gas or you weighted fruit in a grocery. You trusted that when the pump said one litter, you actually got one litter, and the scale showed 1kilogram and you paid indeed for 1 kilogram. Why? Because government inspectors legally test and stamp that pump and scale. That is traditional legal metrology—the science of trust in measurements. But today, we live in a world governed by algorithms. AI decides who gets a mortgage, facial recognition decides who passes through airport security, and automated code protects our critical power grids from cyberattacks. So here is the multi-billion-dollar question: Who is checking the digital gas pump and the scale? How do we measure if an AI is fair, secure, or easily hacked? Today, we have brought together the world's leading minds in AI and cybersecurity, law, and measurement science to demystify how we protect you in the digital age.

NEW DEFENCE

How can metrology meet the needs of the “New Defence”?

New Defence is an emerging approach for innovations in defense. It leverages civilian-dual use technologies, innovation cycles and business models leading to reduced costs and accelerated delivery of defense solutions. By far better efficiency and agility is achieved. AI, quantum technologies, space-based systems and cyber are key technology areas in New Defense but the spectrum of applications is wide. Most of them involve needs for reliable measurement, testing and validation being critical for safe, secure and rapid deployment. New Defense is not only about efficiency in security in the fast-evolving world but also about the readiness to adapt fast when a crisis bursts.
  • What "New Defence" means for metrology?
  • Where could we enhance dual use innovations by improving measurement reliability?
  • How metrology services and infrastructures should be developed to address the needs of efficiency and agility?

  • These are explored in this round table discussion.

QUANTUM COMPUTING

METROLOGY FOR QUANTUM COMPUTING

Quantum computing is rapidly transitioning from laboratory demonstrations to industrially deployable platforms, creating an imperative for rigorous and internationally recognized metrological frameworks. Beyond conventional hardware metrics, the field requires application-oriented methodologies capable of assessing the practical performance, reliability, and reproducibility of quantum processors across diverse technologies. This round table will explore the strategic role of metrology in benchmarking and qualifying quantum computing systems, including the definition of standardized performance indicators, uncertainty quantification, and technology-agnostic evaluation protocols. It will address the contributions of end users, national metrology institutes, industrial stakeholders, and international standardization bodies in establishing a trusted measurement ecosystem. Particular emphasis will be placed on application-driven benchmarks, interoperability, and certification frameworks.

Round Table

METROLOGY MEETS AI

METROLOGY MEETS AI: Confidence in the Age of Prediction

The use of AI tools in metrology opens new field of investigation but also brings significative challenges. AI can be used at different stage of the measurement chain, leveraging the possibility to analyse and process big data to deliver a measure, combining several input data from sensors, sensors network and sensors complex set-ups. However, AI systems often operate as "black boxes," raising critical questions about the explicability of their outputs, the risk of hallucinations, and the propagation of measurement uncertainties.
While classical measurement methods are based on physical principles and comprehensive model, and deliver quantity measured physically, AI-powered devices deliver predictions. Paradigm changes: data become the representation of the world!

Measurement data are the ground base of the AI modelling. The quality of these data, a must to deliver accurate model prediction. Beside data format, data quality from the metrology perspective consists in measurement uncertainty. Indeed, measurement uncertainty will propagate through AI model as it propagates through classical modelling, and might lead to low level of confidence in the model output. Eventually, the question rises whether the validation and certification of measurement method using AI algorithms has to be reviewed with respect to actual standards.

This round table will bring together metrology experts and practitioners to explore these challenges and opportunities through concrete industrial examples, fostering a collective reflection on how our community can shape the future of AI-driven measurement.

Round Table

ISO 10012:2026

Is ISO 10012:2026 a New Deal for Industrial Metrology?

Mastering industrial measurement is an imperative when making production-related decisions: threshold exceedance, scrapping, qualification... Critical stakes – quality, safety and regulatory compliance – depend on this mastery, which implies a minimum shared culture of Metrology among diverse professions.

The ISO 10012 offered industry a guide often reduced to operational management of measuring equipments. But since its major revision of February 2026, it has moved away from a purely operational viewpoint and aligned itself with managerial logic as Quality in ISO 9001. By taking a fresh look at the overall management of “Measurement”, it directly challenges us about the identity and role of Metrology within the company, at a time when so many stakes depend on it.

  • What is the exact scope of ISO 10012:2026? For which audiences?
  • What are the differences between the former and the newest version?
  • Why is there tension between this standard and ISO/IEC 17025, the standard for testing and calibration laboratories?
  • What impact for a company wishing to comply with it? Is the industrial world ready for this?

This roundtable will attempt to answer these questions and help you see things clearly!
